The process of canonization of João Cabral in Portugual

This article, originally presented as a lecture to a foreign audience, follows the process of canonization of Brazilian poet João Cabral de Melo Neto in Portugal. In order to do so, it restores significant parts of the Portuguese critical reception to Cabral’s work and raises other information that helps to understand its institutionalization in the 60’s. To conclude, it mentions contemporary critics of Cabral’s work and inquires about the future reception towards his poetry considering the current context of education of Brazilian Literature in Portugal.
