Abstract

The article analyzes the importance of universities as curatorial institutions, which produce, organize and preserve throughout their existence collections with different purposes, revealing scientific, cultural, historical and social potential of enormous importance to Brazilian society. However, as a fundamental point of problematization, the text argues that a large part of this material is still inaccessible on the Internet and that it has enormous potential to be digitized and made available on the network from digital repositories specially built and elaborated for this purpose. Using the Brazilian Network of University Collections and Museums as a database, the article demonstrates that of the 536 university collections currently existing in Brazil, less than 30% publish some type of digital object on their websites and around only 7% use some type of digital repository for managing the information of your collections.
