Abstract

We present considerations about gender and race in the Paraense Amazon, in order to think about the impacts of racism, male chauvinism and misogyny on the lives of black Marajoara women. In order to carry out these reflections, we searched the following trajectory: First, we explored black’s historiography in the Amazon and their intertwining with Marajó; subsequently, focused on concepts of identity, gender, racism, male chauvinism and misogeny, and then, finally, we demonstrate the research’s results. This exploratory study, developed from a bibliographic, documentary and field survey, constitute development of the extension project “Ser Negro no Marajó”, which has a strong articulation with research and teaching, in order to identify demands regarding the ethnic-racial diversity discussion in the Marajoara region. Thus, in the period from August to September 2017, we interviewed 34 people, in total. However, in this study we emphasize the speeches of the 22 women who participated in the research. We verified that these 22 women are cisgenders, servants, students of higher education courses and teachers of public schools in Breves / PA. Those who declare themselves to be brown do not realize themselves as black women and do not identify situations of racism throughout their lives, while those who declare themselves as black people, by assuming a black identity, reported different situations of racism, referring us to the emergent and necessary debate on colorism, miscegenation and pigmentocracy in the Amazon and Marajó.
