Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this article is to reveal a part of the content of the Northumbrian Chronicles written from the reign of Edwin of Northumbria (r. 616–632). Through the intertexts of three insular chronicles, we highlight a network of information circulation about northern Britain. We analyze the intertextualities based on the repeated information among the Chronicle of Ireland (Armagh, c. 740–911), the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle (Winchester, c. 890–1154), and the Annals of Wales (St. Davids, c. 955–1203). We ask: why did intertextual connections emerge in the production of chronicles in Ireland and Britain? Under the methodology of Connected Histories, our central argument is that the Northumbrian Chronicles grounded the chronicle records between the reign of Edwin and the end of the 8th century.
