Abstract

Martim Francisco Ribeiro de Andrada is known for historiography above all his political performance in the Independence period, when he took part of the "Gabinete dos Andradas". His scientific studies work, however, was less studied. He fulfilled a series of scientifics travels to São Paulo captaincy in the range of the General Direction of Gold, Silver and Iron mines, scientific institution that had a fundamental contribution to the natural science emergency and consolidation of that particular colonial region. The scientifics travels will be analized as being part of the policitical-reformist project headed by the main Ministry of "viradeira" - Dom Rodrigo de Sousa Coutinho, who aimed to stimulate the natural resources of the main Portuguese colony, Brazil, and through this foment the modernization of Portugal's economy.
