The second half of the nineteenth century posed important changes for the British labour world, especially the English: the monopolist phase of capitalism and imperialist expansion brought about a new configuration of the labour world in England, with important political developments for the working class in that country. This article aims to present these changes and developments, focusing on the gender contradictions of this long process of working class adherence to reformism through the institution of the so-called 'male breadwinner model'. We will argue about the central role of this model in this adherence, presenting an overview of the impact of this model on working class militancy at the end of the nineteenth century and its main political development, the foundation of the British Labour Party.
