Abstract

This essay's purpose consists in applying Thomas Elsaesser's category to understand the leading figures of Weimar culture, namely: transparent duplicities. According to Elsaesser, the Weimar intellectual knew more about themselves than any other critic and culture historian could ever possibly know. In order to illustrate the concept, this paper deals with Metropolis and M, two Fritz Lang's films which weren't analyzed by Elsaesser under that category, that, by its turn, might be very useful for a historicist approach towards the Weimar period.
