This article analyses the discourse that attempts to characterize Physical Education programs in the school currivulum as a means to attenuate the recent Brazilian failure in sports, by making school a center of sports massification an, as a consequence, a place for discovering sports talents who could become olympic athletes. Therefore, the statements of two famous national sports leaders were selected from the press for this purpose. From their assertions, the sports principles sought by such leaders (performance, o spectacle, olympics) are confronted with the role of Physical Education at 28 schools and, thereby, with its social function. It is inquired whether sports at or of schools should be concerned with identifying sports talents or offer the appropriation of this phenomenon and knowledge built by the social an historical production of human kind. It is also questioned whether Physical Education programs at Schools should help form people who are able to enjoy sport as an active participant, beginning with its appropriation, through the school, as an elaborated knowledge, or contribute to turn nom-talented sportspeople (the majority) into mere onlooking consumers of mystified sports idols who were once recognized as sports talents.
