Abstract

This text is a critical review of the documentary “Pelé”, released by Netflix in February 2021. The work presents Pelé's football career between the 1958 and 1970 World Cups and, for that, shows the tensions surrounding the personage and the Brazilian political context. Based on these reflections and on his recurring comparison with Muhammad Ali, we ask: Why did Pelé take a non-combative position in relation to political issues of his time? Based on the civilizing process theory, we sought to respond in observance of the power relations, which placed Pelé as a member of the established society, and the social configuration that, formed by football / sport, State and people, and the governance of a regime authoritarian and violent, decreased the degrees of freedom for Pelé.
