Abstract

This research aims to analyse the reading of newspapers performed by students of Social Communication, graduating in Journalism from Federal University of Goiás (UFG), based on the folio wing categories: communication, information, criticism and cultural industry. These categories were studied in a communicative context, considering that teaching is a communicative act. This research discusses the educational potencial of newspaper in the formation of the future journalist, considering that this potencial allows the perception of the contradictions which exist in the production of the media and, consequently, in society. Recent studies about reception also show a new reality in which the reader is no more considered unable to react against the messages received. Models and proposals of a new education to the means prove that is possible to teach children, youths and adults to critically read the mass media.
