Abstract

From 2018 on, there have been changes in the national production scenario for black pepper, with the center of production shifting from the North to the Southeast region, with Espírito Santo (ES) taking on the role of the main national producer. One of the reasons for this change is that the pipericulture of ES is more competitive than Para’s, which was then the main national producer. This led us to the following question: would a geographical indication (GI) for black pepper produced in the state of Pará help to reverse this situation? Our research showed that the granting of a geographical indication for black pepper from Para is urgent and necessary, as this makes it possible to differentiate this production and begin work on qualifying and adding value to product.
