What is a protist?

Abstract

In the present manuscript, was discussed the use of the term protist, the various system-atic proposals which use the term as kingdom Protista and the unsustainability of the term in the phy-logenetic systematic perspective. Finally, it was support the use of the term only as a didactic resource and restricted to the concept of unicellular eukaryotic organisms.

Graduado  em Ciências Biológicas pela Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora (1998), mestrado em Ciências Biológicas, Comportamento e Ecologia Animal pela Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora (2000) e doutorado em Ciências (Parasitologia) pela Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro (2005). Atualmente é Professor do Departamento de Ciências Naturais da Universidade Federal de São João del-Rei (UFSJ)
