First documented record of melanism in White-eared Pufbird Nystalus chacuru Vieillot, 1816 (Piciformes: bucconidae)

Abstract

The João-bobo (Nystalus chacuru) is a species belonging to the family Bucconidae, with a wide distribution throughout Brazil, except in some regions of the Amazon. In this paper, I present the first documented record of melanism in an individual found in the Northwest of Rio Grande do Sul State, in the municipality of Santa Rosa. This mischaracterization of the original pigmentation of the plumage consists in the increased formation of melanin in the body, resulting in a darker color in individuals, however, not harming or causing diseases as in other genetic mutations. However, this record becomes an important documentation of the phenomenon, since there are still no reports of the case recorded for the species.

Graduado em Licenciatura em Ciências Biológicas (2022) pelo Instituto Federal Farroupilha, campus Santa Rosa/RS. Tem experiência na área de Educação Ambiental, Ornitologia, Zoologia e Fotografia. No presente, atua como Coordenador do Projeto Dispersar, realizando oficinas, palestras e atividades de campo através da observação de aves. Integra o Projeto "Água Santa" da Cooperativa Cooperluz como monitor ambiental. Atua também como professor oficineiro na Escola de Educação Infantil Curumim e consultor ambiental, onde realiza levantamentos de fauna com ênfase na avifauna.
