Abstract

Research of comparative data is important to the preservation and protection of animals as well as for understanding their evolution. So, our objective was to describe the anatomy of the shoulder joint of the Sapajus libidinosus monkey. Shoulders of eight monkeys, from the Anatomy Laboratory of the Federal University of Uberlândia, granted by IBAMA were used. The preparation of anatomical specimens followed standard procedures in Anatomy. The results showed that the shoulder joint of S. libidinosus monkeys is fragile, and has a delicate and loose articular capsule, contributing little to the glenohumeral stability. Their joint surfaces include the glenoid cavity and the humeral head, andthe glenoid labrum, when present, appears as a narrow fibrocartilaginous lamina. The coracohumeraland transverse humeral ligaments are present, while the glenohumeral ligaments and coracoacromial ligaments are absent. Strong muscular tendons pass through this joint and reinforce the joint capsule. Since the movements that the shoulder joint of the S. libidinosus monkey allows are large, the main element of stability of this joint is the adjacent muscles and their strong tendons.
