DIAGNOSIS AND MICROBIOLOGICAL DETERMINATION OF THE MASTITIS IN DAIRY CATTLE HERDS FROM “TABULEIROS COSTEIROS” REGION IN SERGIPE STATE, BRAZIL

Abstract

Aiming to determine the occurrence of the mastitis and the microbiological relationhip between the lab tests and the auxiliary tests which are done in the field, two cattle herds were studied for 18 months and 893 milk samples were collected. The udders were clinically examined, and the milk was tested using the strip cup test and the California Mastitis Test (CMT). The Staphylococcus aureus was isolated in 196 (21.95%) samples, the coagulase-negative Staphylococcus sp. (SCN) in 104 (11.65%), the  Streptococcus agalactiae in 67 (7.50%), the esculin-positive Streptococcus sp. (ESCPOS) in 20 (2.24%), the esculin-negative Streptococcus sp. (ESCNEG) in 29 (3.25%), leavenings in one (0.11%) and the Corynebacterium sp. in 16 (1.68%) samples. In the total, 433 microrganisms were isolated, 350 milk samples were negative and in 110 (12.32%) samples the isolation and identification were not possible. Out of all the isolated microrganisms, the contagious were more frequent, when compared to the positive reaction for the CMT. The CMT test showned to be important in the presuntive diagnose, demanding, however, a periodic microbiologic analyses of the herd.
