Nesse texto, defendo que, ao contrário do que dizem todos os rumores, o empreendimento da filosofia da história segue bem vivo nos dias de hoje – diria até indispensável. Isso não significa dizer, é claro, que as críticas do pós-guerra devem ser completamente desconsideradas. A questão não é como retornar a uma descreditada filosofia da história, idealizadora do conceito processual de história, dotada de direcionalidade, teleologia, sentido e substância inerentes no desenrolar das coisas humanas. A questão é se a possibilidade de mudança das coisas humanas no tempo pode ser conceitualizada enquanto ‘história’ sem invocar os atributos previamente mencionados. Essa não é uma pergunta fácil. Na realidade, essa pergunta consiste em outras duas perguntas distintas, mas profundamente interrelacionadas: primeiro, se é possível conceber um tempo histórico em outros termos que não processuais-desenvolvimentais; e segundo, se tal temporalidade outra-que-não-processual pode ainda ser ‘histórica’ no sentido de reter a possibilidade de mudança das coisas humanas no tempo.
