This article revisits some thoughts elaborated for the remembrance of Walter Benjamin on the 80th anniversary of his death. It insists on this paradigmatic death for that of all refugees and exiles who never have the necessary visas and identity cards to cross countless borders. It attempts to defend an interpretation of "On the concept of history", his last written piece, as not being a text of "philosophy of history", but rather a critical philosophical reflection on historiography, questioning the political and social position of the historian, as well as the relevance of the transmission (Überlieferung) from the past to the present.
