Abstract

This article promotes a compared analysis between “O caso da vara” e Quincas
Borba, by Machado de Assis, observing the way by wich satire and humor are
inserted in the aesthetic project of the author, especially in the configuration
of a “realism of evaluation”. Narrator and focalization construct a critical
dimension by the mean of the comical forms mentioned, visualizing the “minor
social interval” that, in according to Alfredo Bosi, characterizes Brazilian
Realism under Machado de Assis.
