Abstract

This article evidence the expansion of causative construction in Brazilian Portuguese. Our objective is to present it as a construction in gradual expansion in informal registers. The theoretical assumptions are linked to Cognitive Linguistics and the methodology is descriptive and qualitative. The traditionally intransitive verbs crescer, desmaiar, evoluir e falir would not occur in the causative, however, our analysis shows that they occur in the causative [[XCAUSA]] [[YEVENTO]], contrasting with the traditional grammar. The results indicate that this use in new contexts is possible due to the semantic compatibility between the meanings of the construction and of the verb.
