This work makes a reflection on the symbolism of water and fire. These two antithetic elements go through the 447 pages of the novel Serra do Cafezal: retratos e lembranças, by Maria Eloá S. Lima.
Moreover, it elucidates the metalinguistic aspects dissimulated in the narration of the main female character and shows some directions to analyse an epic, whose historical, folk and linguistic substratum is of great importance.
