The essay aims to study the occurrence and the meaning of passionate love in two Camilo Castelo Branco's novellas, Amor de perdição and Amor de salvação: a) as a disease, as seem by Plato and the Stoics; b) as fate, showing up that the tra-gic connotation present in the word is, in fact, not only in Amor de perdição but in Amor de salvação as well, even though the narrator tries to hide this evidence.
