Almost modern: a reading memorial Aires

This essay aims to examine the ways Memorial de Aires, Machado de Assis’novel, in shaping the themes of the amenities and frivolities of the Brazilian elite
in late nineteenth century, is pervaded by impacts of Brazilian society of the
epoch, which shows itself undecided between tradition and modernity,
conservatism and change.
