Abstract

In this article, we will analyze Nora Webster (2014) by Colm
Tóibín. This novel tells the story of the protagonist’s journey towards
restructuring her life with her children after the death of her husband.
We propose to examine how the transformations experienced by Nora
are influenced by the historical-social context in which she finds herself
and how this affects her family unit and her identity. We understand that
this work can be analyzed from the perspective of “portability”. This term
was first employed by Costello-Sullivan (2012) to discuss the cultural
portability existing in Brooklyn (2011), another novel by Tóibín.
