Abstract

The  article  presents  a  study  on  auction  of  books  ads  published  in  Correio Mercantil (Rio de Janeiro – Brazil), between the years of 1848 and 1868. It presents a peculiar form of buying and selling books, the advertising strategies used  by  auctioneers  and  the  presence  of  novels  among  the  auctioned  books. Furthermore, it analyses the social economic profile of the owners of books sold at auction and the main reasons that led them to dispose of their libraries. The purpose of this paper is to present a little-studied form of book trade, reflect
on the possession of books in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and discuss the social placement of novels readers in the Imperial capital in the mid-nineteenth century.
