Abstract

This article aims to present some considerations on two sonnets by the Portuguese poet Gomes Leal (1848-1921) – O astrólogo e O novo livro –, both from Claridades do Sul (1875), book consecrated by the critical tradition as his masterpiece. The poems address to recurring questions in the author’s work and can be read as an expression of feelings of decadence at the end of the century; at the same time, they work as a preparatory step for O Anticristo (1884-1886). The article also argues that the pessimistic prognosis in the sonnets can be read
as a figuration of the poet’s trajectory.
