The main political unrests occurring in Brazil in the late 19 th Century are in the center of the actions of “Ismália Caré” episode, in the trilogy O tempo e o vento, written by Erico Verissimo. In Santa Fé, the characters actively participate in campaigns for the slavery abolition and the establishment of the Republic. In this context, the Cambará family founded the newspaper “O Democrata” to advertise their ideals and also to receive orientations of the Republican doctrine by texts of “A Federação”. This research aims to analyse the literary representation of those historic facts and aims to show how the reading and production of newspapers are related to the ideological formation of the characters and the narrative configuration.Downloads
