Abstract

This study proposes an interpretation of the short story "Singular ocorrência", by Machado de Assis, which is taken from the text itself, as it is suggested by any good technique of literary studies; howeves, it also takes into account the underlying sociocultural aspects, which can be seen by any good reader.
