Abstract

In Andreï Makine’s literary work, the loss of attachment to one´s birthplace andthe quest for the West as a possible place of freedom are both recurrent themes. In Once upon the river Love, the influence of the movies on the construction ofsubjectivity and the fascination by French language are fictional elements thatcontribute decisively to the creation of a symbolic France and to the emergenceof a wish for exile.
