MECHANISMS OF LEGITIMACY AND TRADITION IN LATIN HISTORIOGRAPHY

Abstract

Latin historians, such as Livy, Tacitus and Amraianus, whose texts have survived in better condition, have a set of particular features that distinguish them from Greek historiography, thus creating a distinctive written tradition. This article discusses some theoretical aspects related to the definitions of genre in Latin historiography, notably the rhetorical tools used by the Latin historians in order to include and endorse themselves within tradition.
