Abstract

The traditional historiography of movies is descriptive and little contributes to an understanding of the mutations of the process of production of films and of contents transmitted by them. The few studies of Marxist orientation on the movies suffer of methodological and theoretical problems due to the influence of Lenin's theory of reflex, and a realistic aesthetic derived of it. The historical materialism assumes, therefore, a fundamental role to surpass many the limits of the traditional historiography of the movies as the contributions supposedly Marxist in that area. Categories such as totality, fundamental determination and the concepts of capitalism, fight of classes, capital accumulation, ideology, among others, are the key for the production of a rebuilding history of movies, having as a base the historical materialism.

KEYS WORDS: history of movies, historical materialism, film, totality, ideology.
