Abstract

In the Kingdom of Aragon, between the 13th and 14th centuries, specifically during the reign of James II (1291-1327), the value of scientific medicine predominated. And in this context, the search for professionals in the medical field prevailed, not only those with university training, but also the practical ones. Thus, the monarch turned to the Jewish physicists who settled in his kingdom to look after his health and that of his family and to be part of the medical team that accompanied him on military campaigns. From the perspective of connected histories, epistles, mainly written in Latin, the language used in the Crown's official correspondence, and also in Catalan, play a direct role in the circulation of information in Aragon. In this article, based on the study of letters from the royal Cancilleria, we have selected missives relating to Jewish physicists, in order to present and discuss the dissemination of information and knowledge, as well as James II's interest in medical books and the deployment of health professionals to attend to the royal family.
