Abstract

The article summarizes the history of the World Anti-Communist League (WACL), highlighting the Brazilian and Portuguese presences in the first Asian conference cycle of what was, during the Cold War, the "International" of exterminist far-right groups. It points out the meteoric rise of the Brazilian branch of WACL within the League’s power structures, showing how Brazilian extremists reached the presidency of this "Anti-Communist International" in the biennium 1975-1976. The article rescues the political concerns and secret activities of WACL, under the American and Brazilian presidencies, regarding the 1974 Carnation Revolution in Portugal and the subsequent end of the Estado Novo. It highlights the failed move to connect with the CIA, via WACL, attempted by the Brazilian Society for the Defense of Family, Tradition, and Property (TFP) and the role of the Brazilian WACL branch, the Society of Political, Economic, and Social Studies (SEPES), which defended the image of Pinochet's Chile abroad. It brings to light an accusation made at the time in a headline of the Diário de Lisboa circulated through the diplomatic-military channels of the Brazilian dictatorship (1964-1985) in which WACL was accused of being associated with the 1976 terrorist attack against the Cuban Embassy in Portugal. The aim is to contribute to the historiography of Cold War anti-communist internationalism, elucidating the Portuguese and Brazilian presences in the political-ideological project of far-right internationalization embodied in WACL. Besides specialized literature, period newspapers, and primary sources from the archives of the CIA and the National Information Service (SNI) of the Brazilian military were consulted.
