Abstract

This article aims at the thematic historical analysis of women's health in the Ancient World. Through a bibliographical and historiographical research, an overview of the subject in ancient societies around the  Mediterranean is presented. From the focus on women's health and the knowledge demonstrated in written documents and material culture, the discussion was directed towards a specific focus with a thematic and documental approach centered on the Roman Empire,
more specifically on the period of the Principate, with the analysis of Book 7 of Pliny the Elder's Natural History. In view of the clipping, the approach was established in the process of construction of the knowledge presented in the book, as well as the conceptions regarding some terms such as fertilization, pregnancy and childbirth.
