Abstract

The text focuses on three doctorate's graduation theses defended between 1919 and 1929, in Rio de Janeiro's Medical School, where spiritism is presented as the main concern. Two of these theses fit perfectly in the institutional stand point, denying spiritism any familiarity, not only with religion, but also with science. In those theses, spiritism is reassured as an important factor of mental alienation. The third thesis represents a stand point completly contrary to the institution, in which the author tries to demonstrate the need for it to recognize the spiritist phenomena and the possibility of having some therapy focused on spiritism.

KEY WORDS: Spiritism, mediumistic religions, medical-psychiatric speech.
