Abstract

As a narrator of the urban space, Walter Benjamin experiences a constant tension with what he narrates. Sometimes he cannot even understand what happens around him; transformations are so vertiginous, fast, and brutal, that he can hardly follow them. In this paper Benjamin appears as the flâneur, whose notion according to him translates the mobility spirit modernity introduces. To do so, it is crucial to discuss the notion of space, particularly the urban space of Paris. The flâneur emerges as non-rooted individual who moves through the urban space remodeled.
