The aim of this paper is to present the preliminary results of the research about the presence of almunias from the Almoravid period in North Africa and Al-Andalus. To achieve this aim, the starting point is the contextualisation of these recreational establishments, present in the Islamic Mediterranean architecture since the beginning of the Islamic domination, according to their characteristics and functionality. Hereafter it is addressed the study cases about the possible Almoravid almunias located in the capital of the Empire (Marrakech) and Al-Andalus. According to the methodology, a study of the written sources and the historiography has been developed, also taking into account the documented archaeological remains. Furthermore, a comparative analysis with the conserved peri-urban properties from the Almohad period has been developed. As a result, the preliminary hypothesis of the presence of this type of establishment in the peri-urban territory around the main cities of the Almoravid Empire is raised.
