Abstract

In early 19th century, southern Argentina was yet almost unknown to most criollos, but desired for farms and cattle. There lived native-americans who dealed and resisted since the coming of the Spanish colonists. Organized into confederations, they joined into the politics, wars and commerce, fought for their projects, resisted and eventually won, always in defense of autonomy and territory. This paper focuses on Salinas Grandes confederation and its cacique, Juan Calfucurá, the strongests forces to the Argentinean native-american forces.
