Abstract

This article aims to realize a brief research about the literary texts and their images’ ability to offer their readers practical solutions in the medieval political framework. To do this, we present an analysis of the John Ball’s letters –produced in the area of the English Rising of 1381– and, in particular, of the references in them to contemporary poem Piers Plowman and to its apocalyptic imagery. Starting from theoretical budgets linked to intellectual history, the study wants to explore the space where the encounter –invoking P. Ricoeur’s terms– between the “world of the text” and the “world of the reader” takes place, in order to identify potential uses or interpretations and to relate them, when appropriate, to the specifical conditions that produce them
