Abstract

In this text we will examine three Letters contained in the Chartularium Universitatis Parisiensis that explain the mediation of King Louis IX in one of the main episodes that took place at the University of Paris between 1250 and 1260, which was the clash between the secular and the regular masters. Our purpose is to reflect on the importance of this debate and the way the king, as a lay authority, positioned himself in it. For our reflection we recover the studies of two historians who analyzed this reign. The first was the historian François Guizot and the second Jacques Le Goff. Our aim was to recuperate the memory of this event through the sources and historiography because we understand that they allow us to comprehend the origins of the relations between university masters and the ruler, ultimately, the roots of our “home”.
