Abstract

In this article some of the most representative chronicles of medieval Castilian historiography are analyzed in order to study the way in which throughout the XIII, XIV and XV centuries the collective identity of that kingdom was transformed from its confrontation permanent with the Muslims. If during the first half of the thirteenth century the existence of a collective identity based almost exclusively on the feeling of belonging to a religious community can be verified, a new identity marked by the sense of belonging to a religious community has been gradually established since the 14th century. a political community made up of the king, the territory and its subjects in which the historical discourse played a central role as a unifying element of these elements.
