Abstract

In recent years, historians have underlined the importance of the notion
of support to a history of reading. This essay insists on the relevance of historicity
of the reader-body which fuses into the supports of writing. It reflects the history
of reading as a history of the body and speculates if the invention of silent reading
in the Medieval Western world should not be thought of as the production of a
new body technique.
