Abstract

The present paper is about the project of modernity in Goiás in the beginning of the twentieth century, mainly from 1930 to 1941. Due to the speciflcal conditions presented in Goiás and to the insertion into the national reality, modernity was a combination of retrogression and imperativeness. This pecualiarity can be understood through the analysis of the general conditions of development of modernity as an Occident historical phenomenon spread all over the world. During the analysis, we relate the phenomenon to the establisment of the burgeois society, to democracy and to maintenance of imperativeness.
