Abstract

The late Portuguese Middle Ages gave to charily a great role in the process of the afirmation of the royal power. Based on the marian female model and on the mendicant's discourse, the queen Elizabeth's actions were able to eliminate the social distances. Then, she had been transformed in a saint by the oral tradition. This queen's pattern established a role for the first lady in the Portuguese political imaginary.

Key-words: Portugal; queen; charity.
