Abstract

The text presents a synthesis of the present situation of Indian Lands in Brazil, the procedures for their recognition by the State, and the scenario of invasion and occupation of Indian Lands. It also deals with the pressure from within Congress to bring about the regularization of Indian Lands in the Amazon region to facilitate the "regularization" of interests of large mining and hydroelectric companies. It discusses the strategy to create mechanisms which permit companies to enter into direct agreements with indigenous leaders to provide indemnification and assistence programmes in exchange for the predatory exploitation of the natural resources, thereby creating ways to exploit mineral and hydroelectric resources in Indian Lands "within the Law", backed up by a rhetoric of "Indian selfdetermination" and "sustainable development".

Key-words: Indian Lands, Demarcation, Homologation, Invasions, Development Projects, Mining, Hydroelectric Schemes, Regularization.
