Abstract

The Cegalla's Portuguese textbook (grammar, anthology and exercises) was adopted by the Brazilian elementary and high school teaching in the 60 and 70 years. It had formed generations founded in the principle that the language and the patriotism were the principal elements of the national integration and identity. The grammar was a technology which had favoured the correct way of language speaking. These political ideas had emerged in two Portuguese language meetings: Congresso da Língua Nacional Cantada (São Paulo, 1937) e Congresso Brasileiro de Língua Falada no Teatro (Salvador, 1954). The anthology had selected literary excerts to preserve a national memory based on a "pure" Language and nationalistic literature.

Key words: National identity, grammar, memory.
