Abstract

In the 14th and 15th centuries, clerical concubinage was defined by the laws of the kingdom of Portugal as a crime punished by Royal justice. It was especially severe on the women who violated this law. The legal discourse which legitimized this persecution by the monarchy of these clerical concubines, was based on medieval law and Christian values. Although the penalties written in the Afonsinas Ordinance were strict, there was a possibility, through letters of pardon written for the defence of women accused or condemned of clerical concubinage, that the king changed the sentences or pardoned the crime.

Key words: Clerical concubinage, gender relations, sexuality, royal justice.
