Chronic illness in childhood modifies the family dynamics. This research aimed to identify the social network and the kinds of social support, assessing the links supporters, from the families of children with chronic conditions. It was developed a descriptive-exploratory study, with a qualitative approach, based on the testimony of families residing in the city of Joao Pessoa/ Paraíba. The production of the empirical material occurred from November of 2008 to January of 2009 from the semi-structured interviews, participant observation and the construction of the eco-map. In the analysis we obtained data that were grouped in category: identification of network and social support to the family. The results reveal that social networking is a source of strengthening for family and child overcome adversity perspectives related to chronic disease. The family has few connections with the community and their social networks and support is formed by hospital care, financial/material support, companions of hospitalized children and spiritual support. It was revealed that the basic attention is not prepared to accompany these children. Recognising the family as active subject in the care for children with chronic conditions is fundamental, because when a partnership is established with the family, open up opportunities to listen and acceptance for production of shared care and the possibility of building networks and social support confronting the chronic condition in childhood.
