Verbal aggression in nursing work at the hospital

Abstract

A mixed method study in which episodes of violence at work in the form of verbal aggression against nursing professionals in ahospital setting were analyzed. It was conducted with 198 professionals from the nursing team of a hospital in the state ofSanta Catarina, who answered an interview and the Survey Questionnaire Workplace Violence in the Health Sector. It wasidentified that 42.9% of professionals suffered verbal aggression, a type of psychological violence associated with the nurse position (p=0.001), leadership position (p=0.004), white race (p=0.047), higher educational level (p=0.020) and not havinga partner (p=0.046). The interviews revealed the trivialization of verbal aggression against nursing and the lack of measures to combat this phenomenon. There was a high incidence of verbal aggression against nursing in the scenario and evidence oftrivialization of the phenomenon, which impacts the quality of care before the challenges of establishing a culture of peaceand identifying, preventing and treating the problem.
