ABSTRACT
Teaching about pain management in nursing should be a priority in undergraduate courses. The objective of this study was to understand the faculty’s perception regarding the preparation of nursing graduates to provide care to patients in pain. This descriptive and qualitative study was performed in a university in the Brazilian municipality of Mogi das Cruzes. The study participants were 10 nurse professors who taught Nursing Classes in the year of 2010. Content analysis was the chosen method. The following categories emerged: “Pain management as an approach of specific classes”, “The (lack of) preparation of the graduate to provide care to patients in pain”, “Competencies associated with teaching about pain”. This study shows the need to direct efforts towards developing the teaching and learning process with a view to including care to patients in pain in the nursing course curriculum in a holistic way.
