The present qualitative research aimed to investigate the experiences of adolescents during the recess time in a Brazilian public school, in order to understand the conditions, social relations, needs, desires and meanings attributed to that time by the subjects. The research involved an online questionnaire and a semi-structured interview, and revealed a school proposal limited to restrictions on activities and spaces, which is questioned and re-signified by the adolescents, who demand changes. The findings, in dialogue with the academic literature, question the process of constitution, planning and mediation of school recess and its meaning in the education of the subjects.
